This course provides an overview of continuous insulation (CI) code requirements and their role in modern building practices. The first lessons break down the code language and discuss fundamental concepts like condensation control, thermal breaks, and various exterior insulation materials. Students will learn about the physical properties of these materials and design considerations for a successful assembly. Later lessons focus on practical applications and installation techniques for exterior insulation. Next, we will explore optimal insulation placement, fasteners, and installation methods for wood, masonry, and light gauge steel construction, as well as how to integrate windows, focusing on detailing openings, flashings, and trim. We discuss how to implement continuous insulation in conditioned roofs and show some alternative strategies to achieve CI requirements, providing a comprehensive understanding of its role in both residential and commercial construction.
